Bird Art at 50: October 24th to November 14th

The BIRDscapes Gallery, Glandford, Norfolk

A few weeks ago I was delighted to hear I had been invited to take part in a very special exhibition at the Birdscapes Gallery in Norfolk. 50 years ago this year, Robert Gillmor decided that bird art needed to be brought to a much wider audience, and as a result he organised the Exhibition by Contemporary Bird Painters, held in Reading in 1960.

To mark the 50th anniversary of this ground-breaking exhibition, Robert, along with gallery owners Steve & Liz Harris, have invited 50 artists currently working in the UK to each submit a piece of work to be included in the event. I will be featuring a painting of Bar-tailed Godwits, and will be amongst very well known and respected names in British bird art, including Robert Gillmor, Bruce Pearson, John Cox, Michael Warren, Keith Brockie, Chris Rose, Darren Woodhead and Ian Lewington.

New Publication

A little while ago I recieved an advance copy of 'Reptiles of South East Asia' (cover, see below), which has 12 of my snake plates within. Having never painted snakes before, I was really pleased with the way they have reproduced, and even have a couple of my artworks on the front cover (top left banded snake, and the King Cobra, a little further down).

Birdfair mural 2010

Finally I've got round to posting these images of the completed mural. I mainly worked on the background, (the waterfall and forest, inc large tree) in the top photo, and some of the vegetation and pool on the left hand side (middle photo).

Birdfair mural 2010 - Ethiopia's Endemic birds

Each year the birdfair raises money for a particular conservation project focused on birds - with a mural being painted by the artists exhibiting at the event used to promote the cause in whatever area of the world it may be.

This year's focus was the threatened endemic birds of Ethiopia, and John Cox (as he has for many years) produced a design for the canvas. John usually also has been instrumental in painting the background of the mural ready for the rest of us to add our particular bird or birds to the background but having done it for so long, this year the job was passed to myself, alongside Szabolcs Kokay and Stefan Boensch.

To give us a head start, I produced the basic colour design for the mural, which was blocked in by volunteers before our arrival, which made the job of adding all the different bits of vegetation much easier, without having to start with a huge blank canvas. Thanks people!

Birdfair 2010

Birdfair 2010

This year Szabolcs and I had a double stand the the event for the first time, which was much better as we were able to show our work off to the best advantage. More pictures to follow....

Lune Valley, June 2010

A beautiful evening, with hawthorn in blossom and calling curlew and oystercatcher over the fields.

Other birds that have taken up residence in some of Paul's nestboxes include Great tits and blue tits (middle and bottom photos respectively) - young birds having been ringed, in the hand before being returned to their nestboxes.

Pied flycatchers

I spent an evening last week with Paul Cammack, a birder from Lancashire who has been ringing birds for over 20 years. During the summer months he spends much of his spare time studying pied flycathers in the Lune Valley, which, thanks to his efforts and those of other birders in the region, are doing really well in this part of Lancashire.

Interestingly, there was a feature on the BBC North West tonight programme yesterday evening about the pied flycatchers in the Lune valley, at another wood along the valley. John Wilson, part of the North Lancashire ringing group, (and the former RSPB reserve manager at Leighton Moss), was explaining to Diane Oxberry that there are now about 60 pairs in the Lune Valley, a massive rise from just a single pair some 40 years ago.

Barn owls and Roe deer

I spent a couple of hours very early yesterday morning visiting a local site where I had been able to watch Barn Owls hunting during the winter, thanks to a tip off from local wildlife photographer Brian Rafferty - http://www.brianraffertywildlifephotography.blogspot.com

It was the first time I'd visited the site for several weeks, so ti was great to find one of the adult birds roosting in a tree next to his favourite hunting field as soon as I arrived - see photos below. The bird spent most of the time sleeping, but I was able to watch it hunt for about 10 minutes or so around 6am.

In addition to the owl, many other local birds were active including a family party of long tailed tits, reed buntings, goldfinches, whitethroat, a couple of shelduck. I also heard yellowhammer, my first cuckoo of the spring, and a sinlge corn bunting.

Best of all were 2 roe deer which I disturbed. They bolted across the fields, but I was later able to find one animal (not sure if it was another individual or not), browsing along the hedgerow.

Peregrine Falcon Paintings - June 2010

These are a few more sketches from the peregrine site I have been wardening at over the last few weeks. I'm hoping to build some of these studies up into more finished paintings soon - the colour sketch below shows one of the bird's favourite perches, so it may well form the basis of one such study.

My visit this week was the first time I'd visted the site since the 2 chicks hatched, and although the nest scrape is not visible due to it being in a slight hollow on a rocky ledge, the fluffy white heads of the chicks were visible on occasion as they were being fed by both parents.

With the chicks having hatched, the adult birds were easier to study, since they spend most of the time away from the nest scrape and were visible feeding, preening or dozing on the cliff face for most of the time. The female bird was especially vocal during my visit, and I tried (in the bottom page of sketches) to capture her open beak as she called repeatedly to the male.

Black Gouse studies - May 2010

The following pages are a few extracts from recent fieldwork I have been undertaking studying Black Grouse in northern England. This has involved some ridiculously eary starts, getting up and in the car for just after 2am, to ensure I was ready in the hide (you can just see part of it below) by 3am at the latest, soon after which the grouse could be heard echoing their distinctive bubbling calls on the lek.

I've spent many hours over the last few weeks watching the birds dispaly on one of their traditional lekking arenas, an have been captivated by both the birds themselves, and the changing light from the near gloom of a pre-dawn moorland, to the brightly lit arena full of golds and green just a few hours later. Most of the activity had subsided well before 7am, with the birds dispersing from the arena to preen and rest before flying off to their prefered feeding pastures, leaving me to trudge back to the car, exhausted but compltely exhilarated for a 'late' breakfast at around 8am!

The sketchbook page which was only partially completed when I took this photo, can be seen in its finished form below. The mobile phone in the photo might make you think there was a danger of disturbing the birds, but this was not the case. Although there was no reception in the area (there never is in the middle of nowhere, where often the best birds are to be found!), it was on silent mode as an added precaution, and simply enabled me to keep a track of the time.

This sketch, (above), was made just before 5am - the soft, pastel tones of the early morning were something I was trying to capture.

Woodcock studies - May 2010

I was amazed to find this woodcock, on the ground in broad daylight (about 6:20 pm) at the edge of a small marsh where I'd been watching the lapwing chicks feeding. The 'marsh' itself was really only a large boggy field covered by marsh marigold around the centre, with rushes and sedges towrads the northern edge. Having wbeen watching snipe displaying over the area and feeding, it was fantastic to be able to see this close relative, and be able to really study the distinctive differences. The woodcock such a steep forehead, larger eye (appearing at times to tbe very close to the top of the head), a bulbous, almost distorted lookign face (head on) and cleaner, richer lines.

I was also able to watch it feeding, a distinctive bobbing/walking technique, though because of its low down body posture, I kept loosing sight of it amongst the marsh plants and grasses. The colour sketch directly below is not very accurate, but I wanted to get some quick colour notes onto the page to support a couple of reference video I managed to digiscope. I'm really pleased with a couple of the simple sketches on the lower page, where I felt I've manage to successfully capture the jizz of the bird's head/face.

Peregrine sketches, April 2010

Warton Crag, nr Carnforth, Lancs

This well known site has a fully operational watch which is manned by volunteers during the breeding season, to help ensure the successful fledging of the young from this site. I spent my first shift there last week, and here are a few sketches I made of the birds.

This was the first time I've really had the chance to study Peregrines up close in the wild, so it was a great opportunity to get to know the birds a little better. Hopefully my drawings will improve as I spend more time at the site.

Warton Crag Peregrine Watch - April 2010

I've recently joined a group of volunteers guarding the wellknown peregrine site nr Carnforth. This was only my second visit to the site, where the female is now on the nest. It was a great opportunity to study the birds without disturbance, and to watch both male and female giving excellent views whilst drinking tea and eating homemade cake (thanks hunny!)

Female bird (below). She is somewhat larger than the male, most noticably so in flight and also is distinctive in that she has paler grey plumage on the back, with buff/sienna tinging to most of her coverts.

He is generally darker in tone, a more gun-metal appearance with cleaner lines, lacking the pale wing coverts of the female.

Black Grouse sketches - April 2010

Here are a selection of sketchbook extracts from a recent session studying lekking Black Grouse in the north Pennines. This is the first time I've managed to obtain really good views of these wonderful birds, so a massive thanks to LW for his help and kindness in assisting me with a viewing hide.

2010 Focus On Nature Exhibition - New York

The two paintings below have been selected for inclusion at the prestigious Focus On Nature Natural History Illustration Exhibition. This biannual event, held at the New York State Museum, features the best in natural history illustration from across the globe. My 2 paintings will form part of the 2010 exhibition, which will feature a total of 93 artworks from 73 artists whose work was chosen from nearly 200 submissions.

The exhibition runs from April 12th - October 31st 2010

This last weekend I took part in the annual garden birdwatch event, making a note of all the birds seen in the garden for a one hour period. Here's my list for 31/01/10, between 8:30 - 9:30am:

Here's a photo of my now regulararly returning GS Woodpecker, feeding on suet balls. The it is fixed to has 1'' holes drilled in it, filled with home-made bird cake. I put this together earlier in the week, and have been able to watch the woodpecker feeding on it hearly every day. It has also been used by starlings, and a single robin too.

Here are some new illustrations for a children's book on animal digestion. Each species will have several images, including images of the food a paricular animal eats, illustrations showing it eating, and then the creature's poo. All very lovely for the 5-8 year old target market!

I finally managed to grab a couple of shot of this bird yesterday, only the second time one has visited the garden in 7 years. Unlike the first bird that lingered about 30seconds, this individual has been around most days since late last week. Hopefully he'll continue to visit and I'll be able to take some better shots and make some sketches.

Fieldfare in the garden, 13/01/10

Yesterday saw some interesting visitors to the garden, inlcuing this obliging Fieldfare which spent a couple of hours feeding on the apples I have left out. It wasn't so cold during the day, temperateures about zero, but we also had a great spotted woodpecker (first! for the garden) feeding on a fallen suet ball, and also a brief pheasant.

Today (Thusrday), the fieldfare has returned, and at one point there was were 4 thrust species within view (mistle, song, blackbird and fieldfare). Fantastic! These photos aren't so clear as they were digiscoped through the study window, but even so, I'm pretty happy with them.

This study is greatly inspired by the work of Ching. It is very like some of his studies, for which I make no apology. Many of his works comprise studies rather than large and elaborate, heavily composed paintings. I enjoy the way he seeks to represent nature, stripping it back to its simplest, and focusing on the simplicity and beauty of the everyday.

A bit of sketching during some lovely sunny weather at Marshside, with fellow artist John Cox. Very quite on the bird front, though good numbers of waders, mostly black-tailed godwits and golden plover, further out on the marsh.

Sabine's Gull, Hoylake, Wirral

I finally managed to catch up with this bird, having heard news of a lingering adult Sab Gull on the Wirral after the strong NW wings earlier in the week. A great bird, which spent most of its time feeding alone. Occasionally it ventured much closer to the promenade, where most of the black-headed gulls were congregating, therefore allowing interesting size comparison with its common cousins.

This is my first Sabine's gull, and the last of the 3 arctic gulls I've managed to catch up with in the UK.

Here are a couple of photos of my stand from this year's British Birdwatching Fair. The other half of the stand features the work of Szabolcs Kokay - an excellent wildlife artist from Budapest, Hungary.

I've just recieved the news from the Mall Galleries in London, that the large painting of a Short-eared owl, on display at the birdfair, has been accepted into the SWLA (Society of Wildlife Artists) exhibition at the Mall Galleries, along with two other paintings I had on display at the fair ('Egret & paddyfields', and 'Indian mugger crocodile', both of which appeared in the Winter 08/09 edition of Birds Illustrated Magazine.

A new painting exhibited at this year's British Birdwatching Fair. This is the first time I've painted on linen uysing acrylic. The nature of the fabric means it is impossible to recreate the fine deatils of some of my other work, which is great, as it really helps in developing a looser, more painterly style. This painting will be on display at the annual SWLA exhibition at the Mall Galleries, in London.
